How to Find a Black Therapist

Use one of the general therapy directories (Psychology Today, Good Therapy, etc.) and search “serves African American clients,” or if it allows, organizes therapists by ethnicity.
    • For more sliding scale or pro-bono options (these tend to have less Black and Brown clinicians due to limited resources to be able to offer reduced rate sessions):
      • Open Path Collective (www.openpathcollective.org)
      • The Probono Counseling Project (www.probonocounseling.org)
Use a directory created to especially center the Black and Brown experience.
  • Challenges:
    • There are a lot of directories being developed and Black therapists are not as plentiful as we’d like. 😥 You might search Baltimore and only find 2 or so providers—- don’t get discouraged!
    • There is no “vetting” process beyond licensure, as far as we know. Reviews from clients would breach confidentiality and dual relationship values in the mental health field. Most simply require a payment for listing.
      • I am working to resolve the vetting aspect (in Baltimore) to have folks on a registry that have been trained in social justice oriented/liberatory + mind-body frameworks (more to come after October 2019).
